Saving your chapeau!

Lots of us have favourite cycling caps; ones that we've worn on big climbs or special rides; or just one that we've worn in and is comfortable now. Although well-loved caps can suffer from 'floppy peak' as the peak cracks or snaps which can spoil the look of your cap.

Rather than putting up with 'floppy peak', you can spend a few minutes repairing your chapeau and have a firm, proud peak once again!

Firstly turn your cap over and find the rows of stitching on the inside band.

Using a seam-ripper, carefully cut the stitches of the band up to around half-way along the edge of the peak.

When you've ripped the seams open you should be able to slip the current peak form out.

It's a little worse for wear now

So I used a little bit of tape to hold it together and use it for a pattern to cut a new peak out of some firm but easily bendable plastic, recycled from a protein recovery drink sachet box.

Slip the new peak form into the peak and fold down the fabric neatly

Pin the fabric back together making sure you have neatly aligned the parts together

Use a running stitch to re-attach the peak to the cap, ensuring you're stitching neatly through all layers and through the band inside the cap

Voila! Repaired and ready for your head!

Chapeau! :)
